Jesus’ radiant change of appearance while in the presence of Peter, James, and John on the mountaintop evokes the devouring fire of the glory of the LORD. Here, as at Jesus’ baptism, God claims him as a beloved child, in whom God is well pleased. Christ’s Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of his Passion, and the ascent onto the 'high mountain' prepares for the ascent to Calvary. I pray His transfiguration strengthens our faith. Today is the Sunday right before Ash Wednesday. It is a time to celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord because this event marked a transition in Jesus’ ministry in which he “set his face to go to Jerusalem”, where he would die.
