保羅在這段文章裏說因爲在神的律法面前每個人都是徹頭徹尾的罪人，只有在精神死亡後，才能歸於耶穌，才能重生。
《羅馬書》7:7說，“這樣，我們可說甚麽呢？律法是罪嗎？斷乎不是！只是非因律法，我就不知何爲罪。”保羅繼續說，“非律法說‘不可起貪心’，我就不知何爲貪心。”他還補充說，“然而罪趁著機會，就借著誡命叫諸般的貪心在我裏頭發動。”保羅認識到他已違反了神所有613條戒律。換句話說，他只不過是一堆罪孽，只能犯罪，因爲他是祖先亞當的後代，他母親在罪孽中懷他，他生於罪孽中。
