使徒保羅說自己罪得赦免之前，因神的律法，肉體就被定罪，並因罪而死了，但現在因耶穌基督而在罪上死了。其實，信耶穌的我們明白神的義之前，就是重生之前都在律法的支配和詛咒之下。如果不明白給我們帶來神的義的耶穌基督，並因他罪得赦免，我們就只能被律法管轄。
保羅正在說屬靈的道，這靠肉體是難以理解的，也就是說在罪上死亡的人不再受到罪的管轄了，好象死了丈夫的女人對丈夫沒有了義務一般。這段經文聽起來很簡單，實際上在精神上具有極重大的意義。其實，還沒有遇見神的義的人不管喜不喜歡，都只能生活在律法的詛咒之下。原因是他們還沒有解決罪的問題。
