主告訴我們說:“親愛的弟兄啊，一切的靈，你們不可都信，總要試驗那些靈是出於神的不是，因為世上有許多假先知已經出來了”(約翰一書4:1)。
人由三種因素組成:人的靈、體和魂。魂出於神，是動物所沒有的。所以，聖經告訴我們總要試驗那些靈是出於神還是出於撒旦。我們必須通過檢驗那人是否信仰水和聖靈的福音試驗他的靈是否屬耶穌基督。為了那樣做，我們還必須試驗那人是否真正承認耶穌基督為神。
那些靈不是出於神，心裏不接受水和聖靈福音的真理。結果，他們受惡靈的統治，因為他們的罪孽還沒有得洗。也就是說，既然他們拒絕和不信神賜予的水和聖靈福音真理，它們不能被視作出於神的靈。
