Pada jaman Jemaat Mula-Mula, banyak orang Kristen berjalan jauh, mencari tempat yang aman dimana mereka bisa lepas dari penganiayaan penguasa Roma. Kaisar Roma meneruskan keputusannya bahkan setelah matinya Kaisar Nero. Karena orang Kristen tetap menyangkal titah untuk menyembah kepada para kaisar. Orang-orang kudus jaman mula-mula menerima dan menghargai penguasa dunia dari kaisar Roma, tetapi mereka menolak untuk mengakuinya kalau itu berarti bahwa mereka harus meninggalkan iman mereka. Karena mereka berdiri teguh melawan tuntutan kaisar Roma itu, kehidupan Jemaat Mula-Mula dipenuhi dengan penganiayaan dan kemartiran.
