他的门徒在路上很饿，他们在安息日掐起麦穗来吃。看到这里，法利赛人公然指责耶稣和他的门徒。他们指责耶稣和他的门徒破坏了安息日的规矩。但主对他们说:“经上记着大卫和跟从他的人饥饿之时所做的事，你们没有念过吗？他怎么进了神的殿，吃了陈设饼，这饼不是他和跟从他的人可以吃得，惟独祭司才可以吃。”耶稣继续纠正他们错误的想法，说“再者，律法上所记的，当安息日，祭司在殿里犯了安息日还是没有罪，你们没有念过吗？”
法利赛人需要聆听主的责备，必须根据耶稣的教诲纠正他们的信仰之道。主对他们说:“‘我喜爱怜恤，不喜爱祭祀。’你们若明白这话的意思，就不将无罪的当作有罪的了。”我们的主在这里是说，他宁愿我们追求神的怜悯和正确的信仰，而不是热衷于宗教仪式。
