啓示錄由使徒約翰撰寫,記錄了耶穌基督在約翰逗留拔摩島期間神對他的啓示,拔摩島是愛琴海的一個島嶼,在羅馬皇帝多米田統治的衰落期間（約西元95年）約翰曾被流放到該地。約翰被流放到拔摩島見證了神的道和耶穌的陳述,正是在該島約翰因聖靈和天使的感動才見證耶穌顯示出來的神的王國。
