Nadenkend over het feit dat vóór zijn verlossing zijn vlees ter dood was veroordeeld door de Wet van God, maakte de Apostel Paulus de geloofsbelijdenis dat hij, door in Jezus Christus te geloven, dood was voor de zonde. Voordat we de gerechtigheid van God ontmoetten ─dat wil zeggen, voordat we wedergeboren waren─ leefden zij die in Christus geloofden onder de heerschappij en de vloek van de Wet. De Wet zou dus macht over ons hebben gehad als we niet van onze zonden waren verlost door Jezus Christus te ontmoeten, die ons de gerechtigheid van God bracht.
