一位妇人生活在撒马利亚的叙加，已有5个丈夫。为了躲避村民，这位妇人在中午大家午睡的时候头顶水桶到雅各井里挑水。一天中午，她像往常一样去挑水，但耶稣坐在井边。她来到井边取水时，耶稣问她:“妇人，请你给我水喝。”她抬头看到这位男子，意识眼前来了一位犹太人。犹太人的服装是用毯子一样的布料裹在身上，披在肩上。耶稣身上裹着犹太人的衣布。妇人问耶稣:“你既是犹太人，怎么向我一个撒马利亚妇人要水喝呢?”妇人这样说因为虽然撒马利亚人和犹太人同属以色列国，但他们每个人心中有一堵墙。这妇人说这些话是因为犹太人认为混血儿的撒马利亚人极其卑贱，轻视他们和蔑视他们。
