保罗大约在2,000年前写这封信。这里的“小学”指叫人根据律法过律法主义信仰生活的基本道理。过去犹太人在高等学院学习所有的知识。使徒保罗他自己也在著名的迦玛列老师门下受训，学习凭律法敬畏神的知识。所以，使徒保罗称之仍受律法奴役的“小学”，学习律法，即使在耶稣降临后也要执行律法。
保罗信仰水和圣灵的福音。他说:“那承受产业的，虽然是全业的主人，但为孩童的时候却与奴仆毫无分别，乃在师傅和管家的手下，直等他父亲预定的时候来到”。保罗在这段经文里告诉我们，我们必须信仰水和圣灵的福音才能做神的子女，才能继承天国。在遇到主之前，我们受律法的束缚，我们迫切需要一位救世主。
