蛇比任何兽都更加狡猾，它对女人说:“神岂是真说不许你们吃园中所有树上的果子吗？”这时女人回答蛇说:“园中树上的果子，我们可以吃，惟有园当中那棵树上的果子，神曾说:你们不可吃，也不可摸，免得你们死。”
我们无数次阅读这段经文。在这段经文里，我们看到撒旦首先试探这位软弱的女人。我们看出魔鬼如何把亚当和夏娃拖下水。当撒旦的化身蛇来到夏娃身边，试探她，如果夏娃信仰神的道，回击他的攻击，则她可能战胜他。当然，这件事在神的天意里是被允许的。然而，蛇提出这么简单的问题，夏娃不信最基本的真理，结果成了人类堕落的祖先。
