神通過創世記前三章告訴我們撒旦不是自有永有的，因爲撒旦試探和欺騙人，魔鬼阻礙他信神，使他陷入罪孽裏，從而把罪引入人心。
當我們閱讀創世記第一和第二章時，我們發現神創造各種動物，各從其類，但沒有說到神創造撒旦。也沒有說過神創造天使。
但我們閱讀第3章，可以看出蛇如何誘使亞當和夏娃違抗神的道，吃知善惡樹上的果子。至此我們現在熟悉了魔鬼，他的工作是違抗神。經上寫到:“蛇對女人說:‘神豈是真說不許你們吃園中所有樹上的果子嗎？’”
