この聖句は、小アジアのスミルナにある教会に宛てた主の手紙です。この教会は物質的には貧しかったのですが、それでも霊的には豊かな信仰を持った教会でした。その聖徒たちと神のしもべは、ユダヤ人に迫害されながらも信仰を守り、死の苦しみの中でも、主とその水と御霊の福音を否定しませんでした。彼らは神のみことばを信じて戦い、勝利したのです。
