  • The Postscript with Beth Allison Barr
    Feb 2 2026

The Postscript is an academic interview series from the Center for the Study of Evangelicalism, featuring conversations with scholars, writers, and journalists who have recently visited the Center to give a public lecture.

In this first episode, we’re joined by historian Beth Allison Barr to discuss her book Becoming the Pastor’s Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman’s Path to Ministry. Drawing on archival research and lived experience, Barr traces how evangelical Protestantism redefined women’s leadership by binding authority to marriage rather than calling or ordination. Our conversation explores history, gender, power, and what these developments reveal about evangelicalism - past, present, and future.
