• "ANDREA YATES: WHEN POSTPARTUM PSYCHOSIS BECAME MURDER"
    Nov 28 2025
Reid Carter examines the case that changed how America views maternal mental illness. June 20, 2001, Houston. Andrea Yates, suffering severe postpartum psychosis, drowned her five children one by one in the bathtub. Noah, seven. John, five. Paul, three. Luke, two. Mary, six months. Doctors warned her and husband Rusty not to have more children—she'd had two suicide attempts, multiple hospitalizations. Rusty insisted on fifth child. Took her off medication. Left her alone despite doctor's orders. 2002 trial: guilty, life in prison. 2006 retrial: not guilty by reason of insanity. Now at mental hospital. The question: Mental illness or murder?

Prosecutors called it a "diabolical stew of human remains." Then Florida 2009: Paul Merhige sang Christmas carols at Thanksgiving dinner with 16 relatives. Three hours later, opened fire.
