Clamou o Orgulho ao homem: – “Goza a vida!
E fere, brasonado cavaleiro,
Coroado de folhas de loureiro,
Quem vai de alma gemente e consumida...
Veio a Vaidade e disse: – “A toda brida!
Dominarás, além, no mundo inteiro,
Cavalga o tempo e corre ao teu roteiro
De soberana glória indefinida!...
Mas a Verdade, sobre a humana furna,
Gritou-lhe, angustiada, em voz soturna:
– “Insensato! aonde vais, sem Deus, sem norte?”
E impeliu, sem detença e sem barulho,
Cavaleiro e corcel, vaidade e orgulho,
Aos tenebrosos pântanos da Morte
