Versículo 8: “Ao anjo da igreja em Esmirna escreve: Estas coisas diz o primeiro e o último, que esteve morto e tornou a viver:”. A Igreja de Esmirna foi fundada enquanto Paulo ministrava à Igreja de Éfeso. De acordo com a passagem acima, os membros desta Igreja eram bastante pobres, que, devido a sua fé, eram hostilizados pelos judeus em sua comunidade. O quão perseguida esta Igreja foi pelos judeus pode ser visto pelo martírio de Policarpo, um Bispo na era dos Pais da Igreja. Os santos da Igreja primitiva enfrentaram perseguição constante pelos crentes judeus que rejeitaram a Cristo como seu Messias.
