 En agosto de 1819, regresando de la victoria en el Puente de Boyacá hacia Bogotá, Simón Bolívar deambula solo en su caballo, tal como lo había pedido, sin escoltas ni compañeros de armas. Por el norte han salido a recibirlo algunos de sus hombres que estaban en la capital, uno de ellos Hermógenes Maza, quien no reconoce a su jefe y lo confunde con un español y le se tira, lanza en ristre, a matarlo. En ese instante toda habría podido cambiar: la guerra de independencia en América, la historia de Colombia. Entre la bruma, Bolívar vio a Maza y alcanzó a decirle: “No sea pendejo”.
