A self-sufficent attitude can be good in some things, but not in your salvation. God gave us these first three chapters of Romans so that we have no hope in ourselves. The purpose of the Law was never to save us by our Law-keeping. God's righteous character is vindicated by making another way for us to have a righteousness that is not our own. This plan was revealed all through the Old Testament, starting in the Garden of Eden. In fact, you cannot understand the Gospel apart from the foundation of the Old Testament. Salvation is freely accessible, and it gives freedom from self-condemnation and anxiety before God. We only cling to Christ with an open hand; we bring nothing to our own salvation. Jesus is good enough – rest in Him. And He is for everyone. What are you holding onto: your own righteousness or Christ's? Find your only hope in His righteousness alone. The God Who is righteous has also showed us His righteousness by providing us with our Savior. God is not your enemy if you are in Christ!
