On this day in 1967, soul singer Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul, recorded "Respect" which became the Billboard Song of the Year 1967.

Born on this day in 1859 in Galesburg, Illinois, American engineer and inventor, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., who invented the eponymous Ferris Wheel.
