 L'any 1958, el baríton Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau va esdevenir tota una referència en enregistrar amb molt de rigor un cicle lieder. De fet, el primer cicle lieder de la història, "An die Ferne Geliebte" de Beethoven. Des d'aleshores, la manera de cantar aquest repertori ha canviat totalment.
