21 और 22 दिसंबर 2023 को, छत्तीसगढ़ के सरगुजा जिले के अधिकारियों ने हसदेव अरंड जंगल में कोयला खदानों के दूसरे चरण के विस्तार के लिए सैकड़ों हेक्टेयर ज़मीन में हजारों पेड़ों को काट दिया। पिछले एक दशक से आदिवासी छत्तीसगढ़ में 1,500 किमी से अधिक क्षेत्र में फैले हसदेव अरंड जंगलों को बचाने के संघर्ष का हिस्सा रहे हैं। यह क्षेत्र भारत के आदिवासी समुदायों का घर है, जहां घने जंगलों के नीचे अनुमानित पांच अरब टन कोयला दबा हुआ है।
