To carry the weight of rejection and to somehow find a way through it all. Not just with scars, but with strength. That's the journey we're stepping into today. In this episode, we'll talk about post-traumatic stress syndrome, homophobia, family dysfunction, domestic violence, and the fragile but essential roads toward forgiveness and reconciliation. But this just isn't a story about pain. It's also about survival, storytelling, and the power of laughter to keep us sane. And it begins with a book. In 1978, the late Barbara Johnson, a bestselling Christian author, published a book called “Where Does a Mother Go to Resign?” Then later, the publisher changed the name to “When Your Child Breaks Your Heart.” A heartfelt but one sided account of her grief after her son came out as gay. That book touched the hearts of many, but it also told only half the story. Now, decades later, David Johnson, her son, is sharing the other half. David is an author, survivor, cinema therapist and behavior modification psychotherapist. His new book, “When All Else Fails, Blame Your Mother,” is a powerful and personal response to the narrative his mother left behind. It's an unfiltered, emotionally raw, and often hilariously biting look at trauma, family, and what it means to take your story back. He's also the founder of the Crown Bear Society and the creative force behind the YouTube channel, David The Cinema Therapist, where he uses film and humor as therapeutic tools to help others heal, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. This is a conversation about truth, about reclaiming your identity, and about how the stories we inherit don't have to define the ones we write for ourselves.

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks David what inspired the title of his book. “My mother,” David says. “My mother has written over 20 books, and I started the official Barbara Johnson Library, which lists all of her books. And also in my book it lists her books. So once we had been able to bring some repairs to our relationship, then her career took off and she just wrote. Her titles are like, ‘I'm So Glad You Told Me What I Didn't Want to Know,’ and ‘Splashes Of Joy From The Cesspools Of Life,’ she was known for her crazy titles.”

🔴 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/2zVQDLO - What does it mean to rise not just personally, but collectively? How do we align our lives with purpose, presence, and peace in a world that often feels chaotic and distracted? These are the kinds of questions my next guest lives and teaches every day. Joining us today is Joseph Moore, a man of many paths. QiGong instructor, writer, teacher, artist, business owner, and explorer, his journey is one of integration. Blending ancient wisdom with modern practice and grounding spiritual ascension into tangible daily action. He's the bestselling author of “Cultivating Ascension,” a book that's less of a guidebook and more of a gentle wake-up call to slow down. Tune in and reconnect with what truly matters through QiGong journaling, self-reflection, and the daily discipline of intention. Joseph invites us to move from survival to expansion, from distraction to conscious presence. We'll talk today about the power of morning routines, the role of self-examination through tools like the Wheel of Life, and why focusing on the now is perhaps our most radical form of healing. And we'll explore how the raising of the collective consciousness isn't just an abstract ideal, but a very real antidote to the unrest of our times. This is a conversation about energy, alignment and choosing a higher path not just for ourselves, but for everyone we touch.

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Joseph about the backdrop of the purpose and the intention of how his book came to be. “Well, my background is in cultural, social anthropology,” Joseph says. ”And I have a doctorate in divinity, so obviously, my spirituality and my spiritual beliefs are very prominent within this book. But at the same time, I'm very open minded and objective about what other people believe and their influence on modern society. But the purpose of this particular book is just trying to redefine what it is for self-empowerment, what that looks like, and try to assist in finding a communication with everybody's authentic self and bringing that out into the open. And the steps from human to spirit is we all are seeking a connection with sought without, with the divine. What is it that makes us human, and trying to bring that into everyday life.”

🔴 Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: http://bit.ly/2zVQDLO - Across North America and around the world, discussions about diversity, equity and inclusion have taken center stage. From political debates over inclusive education and systemic racism to controversies around corporate DEI programs being scaled back or cut entirely, there's a growing tension between those who want progress and those who push back against it. But beyond the headlines are real people; leaders, advocates and bridge builders who are doing the deep, often uncomfortable work of creating lasting change. And one of those leaders is our guest today, Cam Stewart. Cam is a recognized authority in diversity, inclusion and human rights, with over 25 years of experience spanning law enforcement, public service, and grassroots advocacy. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the YMCA Peace Medal, the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, and a Blackfoot name, Mikotsapinukum, meaning Red morning, an honor given for his contributions to indigenous equity and reconciliation. He's the president of Kanata Intercultural, Board President of StopHateAB and chair of the Rotary District 5360 Indigenous Relations Committee. And in April of this year, he became the bestselling author of his powerful new book, "Live to Die: A Journey in Diversity, Inclusion and Equity," which unpacks not only what DEI truly means, but also what it takes to lead with heart, courage and integrity. Cam's mission is simple but profound to spark brave conversations and help leaders use their privilege and power for positive change.

On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Cam about how he flips the script based on his own experiences. "I've been living it," Cam says. "And I guess that's, as [a] straight white male, person who's kind of found my way, and fell into this work as serving as a policeman. I kind of fell into the work. And it found me more than I found it... and it kind of called me to said, you know, I need to learn more."
