A few months back we had a chance to see Clown in a Cornfield. On last week’s show we reminded everyone that it was coming to theaters. Its box office performance was still surprising to us. We also talk about how well the new Final Destination movie will probably do- even though it probably shouldn’t.

We have had a great time with the last two releases from Osgood Perkins. His next film looks like it is going to be awesome. Just check out the hour long promo that was recently revealed. Something frightening is definitely going on there. Plus, what is happening to all the live service horror games?

Haunted house stories have long been a part of horror. One of the most popular takes on the sub-genre is whether the haunting is real or a trick. It is probably most well known from Scooby-Doo, but it goes back much further. The Ruse may be a little too on the nose with its title, but it does do some things right.

The problem is, with this type of story, you pretty much have to do everything right. Even the smallest mistake can be immersion breaking and ruin the whole thing. And there is a lot of that here. Some of it is so bad it actually becomes funny. Unfortunately, most of it is just plain bad.

A Breed Apart is a weird movie. The premise is cut and dry. A group of influencers go to a private island and end up in a battle for survival against a pack of wild dogs. But everything around it is just odd. It is not the fact that the movie never explains exactly what is going on. And it is not because it does not truly find itself until the final ten minutes. It is not even because of the really strange dialogue.

What makes it so interesting is the fact that the majority of it may have been done through AI. How can you tell the difference between CGI and AI? How did it impact A Breed Apart? Was the script done with AI? We try to answer these questions and more in our latest show.

There has been a lot of talk around Sinners. Good, bad, or ugly, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Is it really the best movie of the young year? Is it grossly overrated? Something else entirely? Whatever the case, audiences are going out to see it in drovers. What is being overlooked by many is the biggest irony surrounding it.

We spend a lot of time talking lovingly of the theater experience. It was a big part of growing up and still remains fun even as adults. So it sucks to hear when the CEO of Netflix says theaters are outdated. It is not so much his opinion that matters, but the fact that he actually has the power to make movie theaters obsolete.

Which makes it all the better when someone like Rian Johnson talks about how he wants Knives Out 3 in as many movie theaters as possible for as long as it can. Since he has a deal with Netflix, we all know where the movie will eventually end up. The fact that he wants a run that is longer than a week or two is nice to hear.

The detective noir is a genre that does not get the love it used to. A part of this may be due to burnout. The 1930s - 1950s saw a huge number of them released. Many of them are considered classics. There has not been a good one in quite a while so when one bills itself as a triumphant return, we were all in.

Exaggeration is a part of marketing. We get that. But Dark My Light has no film noir elements, at all. There are exactly zero moments. Instead, it is a science fiction movie that wants to be about a character. The question is not why did they market as something it is not. It is not even whether what they ended up doing worked. The real question is did this movie even have a script?

Karate tournament movies were all the rage back in the day. Jean-Claude Van Damme was able to build a career off of them while the legacy of The Karate Kid still lives on. We could not wait to see Absolute Dominion. Sure, the idea may be the flimsiest excuse ever to have a globe spanning battle for supremacy, but nostalgia is a powerful draw.

Regrettably, Absolute Dominion lacks any of the charm of the movies from our childhood. It is way more confusing than it has to be, ignores its most interesting subplot, and lacks any of the tension these types of films need. We also try to figure out who Alex Winter owes money to.

There are not many weeks that go by that we end up discussing news of a horror reboot. This show we talk about the Urban Legends reboot. There is not much news as of yet, but it is definitely coming. We talk about our memories of the movie, why it tends to be overlooked, and whether we are looking forward to it.

During our last show, we talked about the awesome marketing behind Weapons. The advertising blitz for the film continues. This week a two hour YouTube video was released of security camera footage. There was also a bonkers trailer. The question becomes, when can you have too much of a good thing?

Horror movies tend to be based around folklore. So it is not that surprising that there are not that many vampire films from Asia. Daydreamers is one of the first vampire movies to come out of Vietnam. Understandably, the story is a predictable one about a group of bloodsuckers who are fighting the urge to kill humans.

There is no doubting how stylish Daydreamers is. And since there are so few vampire stories from that part of the world, it is easy to forgive many of the missteps. However, there is only so much you can overlook. Poor writing and pacing ruing what would be a flawed, but passable watch.

Taking popular children’s stories and putting a horror spin on them is nothing new. We talk about the recent glut of these types of movies and why people do not really care about them anymore. This leads to our feature presentation, the body horror retelling of Cinderella, The Ugly Stepsister.

The plot is basically the same story everyone knows, but told from the point of view of one of the cruel stepsisters. Still, The Ugly Stepsister is its own tale. Though it covers many of the themes of the source material, the fact that it is told from a different perspective gives everything a different meaning. It is filled with surprises and is disgusting in all the best ways.

We have made no secret that we do not take the Oscars seriously. Like everybody else, we enjoy making predictions and second guessing the winners, but we also know they are a joke. We had no idea just how far that joke went. This week, the Academy made a shocking change that was impossible for us to ignore. We also talk about the recent cast announcements for the Ready or Not sequel.

For as long as people have shared scary stories, trauma has been a part of them. There is nothing more terrifying than real life horrors, after all. The Killgrin is an addition to mental health horror that follows a woman who is trying to cope with a horrible tragedy. After visiting a spiritual healer, she learns she is being followed by an entity that feeds on misery.

It is not the most original premise, but it is one that can work if done correctly. And The Killgrin does do a lot right. There are some gnarly kills, cool creature design, and some decent characters. But a confusing ending and strange decisions negatively impact the film. But is it really fair to call it Temu Smile?

Folk horror has followed an interesting trajectory. What began as stories about people dealing with strange rituals and mysterious happenings has somehow become more about atmosphere and less about characters. Frewaka is something of a throwback. It may be vague and creepy, but it always goes back to its protagonists.

There is a lot to unpack in what is a very straightforward story. Frewaka is an atmospheric film filled with powerful imagery that interweaves slice of life moments. The setting and look of the film are perfect and the fact that most of it is spoken in Irish further immerses the audience. Blake also talks about the most important quality to make a good folk horror movie.

How much did we love Barbarian? Go back and listen to the episode and check it out. You can probably guess that we are very interested in the new movie from its writer-director. And if we already weren’t, the creepy website would easily suck us in. The Hell House LLC franchise is an underrated series that are excellent examples of found footage horror. The news that the final installment comes out later this year is certainly excit- wait. It’s not going to be found footage?

Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time on YouTube has eventually stumbled across a video about the greatest game show scandals of all time. And the Press Your Luck incident is one of the most infamous. After memorizing the board, the former ice cream truck driver went on a record breaking run.

The Luckiest Man in America chronicles the episode and everything surrounding it. It is a character driven story that is more about the people involved than the actual scandal itself. The film uses great performances, aesthetics, and an overall tone to tell its story. If only it had more Whammys and less Johnny Knoxville.

Call of the Void sets itself up to be a crazy ride from its awesome opening. It is an atmosphere that lasts the entire runtime. It is a shame the filmmakers decided to go all in with being creepy and totally decided to ignore the writing. It is a great example of what happens when being vague and weird is more important than actually telling a story.

Any time we have mentioned Death Stranding on our humble little podcast, it has lead to chuckles. The news that it is been adapted to film by A24 just has us dumbfounded. We also talk about the awesomely named Evil Dead Burn. There are some things that we were happy to hear, though there is some cause for worry.

Heart Eyes is the perfect date movie for the horror fan in your life. It is charming, funny, sweet, and scary. It is filled with strong performances and has some very effective kills. It is also the rare slasher which will have you rooting for the protagonists. At times, the rom com elements outshine the actual horror.

Which isn't to say that it is a bad scary movie. Josh Ruben has proven he knows how to put together a good horror movie. Heart Eyes is another example of how he is criminally overlooked. We also talk about the Heart Eyes Killer and the potential for a franchise. Plus, a really creative use of a grape press.

Shadow of God starts off like any other exorcism movie. It begins in a run down part of Mexico, a violent exorcism is taking place, and it is an introduction to the demon that will be the film's main villain. It is also the only part that will look familiar. This is one of the strangest things we have ever reviewed on this show.

The big twist should be that the possessor is God, but the marketing reveals that. It then becomes a question of what they are going to do with it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, not very much. After all, what can you do when the Almighty is an integral part of the plot? Filled with inconsistencies, arthouse tendencies, and a clear lack of direction, Shadow of God ends up being a off putting yet fascinating mix.

Val Kilmer was an excellent actor who could do it all. Whether he was the lead, a supporting character, or Batman himself, Kilmer always left his mark. Most people know him from Tombstone - and rightfully so! We talk about our fondest memories of one of the best actors of this generation.

People already know there is no way a whole year will go by without a Stephen King adaptation. 2025 is testing how many King works movie going audiences will go out and see. We already talked about The Monkey, so what is next? We also do something different this week. Anyone up for a speed run?

Demonoid from 1981 has an awesome poster. Why there are scantily clad babes clinging to a demon a la Conan the Barbarian is something the film never answers. The vampire in the background also remains a mystery. Still, it is an awesome poster that horror movie fans should check out.

Regrettably, the film is nowhere near as good. It is a confusing mess that does not bother to explain much. No one has any definable motivation and the twist ending seems to go against what seems to be the hand’s ultimate plan. It seems like the filmmakers did not know whether Demonoid was heading to theaters or network television and the score is straight out of the 1970s. There is a weird charm to it, but is it enough?

The Hell House LLC franchise is a cult favorite that often gets overlooked. When it was announced the writer/director Stephen Cognetti would be releasing a straight forward haunted house story, we were excited. His work in found footage was excellent and we wanted to see how it would translate to a more narrative form of storytelling.

Unsurprisingly, the scares were the best part of 825 Forest Road. It is in the actual storytelling where the film loses a little of its luster. While there is nothing that is outright bad, there are some very noticeable flaws. The attempts at family drama fall flat and there is very little character development. The ending would have been fine for found footage, but for an actuall movie…?

Last year there was talk of the new Strangers trilogy all being released in the same year. Perhaps wisely, that never happened. Instead, it is replacing a popular franchise on this year’s release schedule. Friday the 13th is one of the most well-known horror franchises of all time. We were excited to hear that a prequel series would be coming. Years ago, Crystal Lake went quiet and we pretty much forgot about it. Out of nowhere, a recent casting announcement was made, and it’s a good one that has got us eager again.

When a movie is called L.A. Aids Jabber, it is hard not to worry. Especially when it is a shot on video from the early 1990s. SOV movies are very hit and miss and adding in a frightening disease as a scare tactic is a sure recipe for disaster. We were prepared for the worst. As it turns out, the film may be the nicest Aidsploitation movie ever made. There is none of the expected homophobia, jokes about sick people, or misconceptions about AIDS. Instead it focuses on its tale of murder, madness, and jabbin’. Over the top performances, subplots that go nowhere, and a nonsensical twist ending made this an absolute treat.

At the other end of the spectrum, is A Cursed Man. It is a great idea. In order to discover if dark magic is real, a filmmaker decides to have a curse put on himself. It is similar to horror movies when someone does not believe in a talisman, urban legend, or ritual and decides to tempt fate. It does not take long for the documentary to go completely off the rails.

The director admits to having no clear plan or direction, everyone laughs off what has decided to do, and worst of all, the subject is one of the most insufferable people ever captured on film. Even his own wife does not seem to take him seriously. The whole thing comes off as a carny act that is as frustrating as it is disappointing.
