 Adriano Willaert, nato nel 1490 e morto nel 1562, è stato un compositore fiammingo, fondatore della scuola veneziana. Nel 1544 pubblicava a Venezia la collezione di polifonia che dà il titolo a questo ciclo: Musica nova. Si tratta di una delle opere a stampa più celebri del periodo. Raccoglie in un unico volume trentatré mottetti e venticinque madrigali per formazioni che variano da quattro a sette voci.
