Esbell faceva parte del popolo macuxi e oltre ad essere stato un grande artista, è stato anche un grande attivista. Ha lottato per reclamare i diritti per la sua gente e diffondere la cultura del suo popolo, messa a repentaglio da violenza, discriminazione e sfruttamento.
