About this listen

In today’s episode of Soul Decodes, hosts, Dr. Tia Jolie Phillips and author Sarah Tirri welcome guest, Sharon Keeble. Sharon is a British journalist and author and visits the Treehouse Studio to share her profound journey through grief after losing her husband Dave to ALS (motor neuron disease). Originally from Manchester, Sharon moved to America in 2005 when the National Enquirer magazine offered her a position as features editor.

One of Sharon's first major assignments was covering the horrifying conditions left behind in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina blasted through. While distributing care packages and meeting survivors, the devastation shocked her, but she also witnessed a remarkable level of gratitude from those who had lost everything—a lesson that would later sustain her through personal tragedy.

In 2016, Dave began experiencing mobility issues. After extensive testing, he was diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative disease affecting motor neurons. Despite the shocking prognosis of three to five years, Sharon refused to accept defeat, throwing herself into research and trying experimental treatments. Dave lived five years, during which they focused on living fully—taking bucket list trips, hosting parties, and creating memories.

Sharon candidly discusses the challenges of caregiving while raising their three daughters and the difficulty of accepting that her once healthy, active husband was now trapped in a failing body while remaining mentally sharp. Dave used a speech machine and wheelchair controlled by head movements, while they did their best to maintain hope and joy.

After Dave's passing in November 2021, Sharon suppressed her grief, focusing entirely on her daughters. However, three years later, unresolved anger and sadness began affecting every aspect of her life. A close friend suggested therapy, which proved transformative. Sharon learned to process her grief while practicing gratitude for their 25 years together.

Sharon shares powerful spiritual experiences, including Dave appearing in dreams to show he could walk again, and recent signs during Thanksgiving week—lights flashing during a family argument, his ‘contact information’ mysteriously appearing on her phone, and a white feather mysteriously appearing in her living room.

The conversation explores themes of impermanence, the importance of living fully in the present, and finding light even in darkness. Sharon emphasizes that grief is a journey requiring support from friends, therapy when needed, and the understanding that bad days will happen but are temporary. She encourages others facing loss to accept help, attend social events—even when difficult, and remember that ‘the sun always comes up’ the next day!
