Ela foi esculpida em calcário, sua forma é de um leão com a cabeça de um rei egípcio, e está localizada no planalto de Gizé. Ela foi construída provavelmente durante o reinado do faraó Khafre (também conhecido como Quéfren, 2558 – 2532 a.C.), embora muitos pesquisadores afirmem que a esfinge foi construída por seu irmão Djedefre (2566 – 2558 a.C.), que tentou usurpar o trono após a morte do faraó Khufu (2589 – 2566 a.C.), o criador da Grande Pirâmide.
