En 2012 las hermanas Wachowski y el director de El perfume, Tom Tykwer (con la colaboración de David Mitchell, el autor de la novela) se embarcaron en El atlas de las nubes, una película que narra seis historias diferentes en seis épocas totalmente distintas y que hace una amalgama de géneros en perfecto equilibrio.
Un proyecto que las grandes productoras rechazaron por su complejidad filosófica y su marketing difícil, que acabó convertido en una coproducción de cuatro países y nueve productoras independientes y que, hoy, es una cinta de culto para los aficionados al cine —y la literatura— de calidad.
