Beethoven scrisse il Quartetto per archi n. 12 in mi bemolle maggiore op. 127 nel 1825. Nel 1822 il principe russo Nikolai Galitzin, eccellente violoncellista, gli aveva commissionato “due o tre nuovi quartetti”. Ancora impegnato su altri fronti (in particolare la Nona Sinfonia), Beethoven si mise al lavoro solo nel 1825, componendo i primi tre di quegli ultimi quartetti che costituiscono il suo lascito estremo. Il primo, pur tradizionale nelle sue forme esteriori, apre la saga cameristica che avrebbe sconvolto il mondo musicale dell’era moderna.
