About this listen

When Your Abuser is Someone You Trust: Date Rape and Consent in India. In this episode, we explored the complex and often overlooked reality of date rape — a form of sexual assault where the perpetrator is not a stranger, but someone close: a friend, boyfriend, or someone the victim trusts.

We discussed how date rape differs from stranger rape, both in how it happens and how society responds to it, especially within the Indian cultural context. We highlighted the mental and emotional toll on survivors — the confusion, betrayal, guilt, and silence they often endure.

In India, date rape is still a crime under the law — consent cannot be assumed based on relationships or past intimacy. We also talked about how victims can report these crimes, and the challenges they face in doing so.

Importantly, we looked at how potential abusers may manipulate situations — through planned outings, forced isolation, substance use like drugs or alcohol, and emotional pressure — often under the guise of friendship or romance.

This episode is a reminder that sexual violence can come from those closest to us, and that consent, trust, and safety must never be taken for granted
