"أَنَا أُعَمِّدُكُمْ بِمَاءٍ لِلتَّوْبَةِ " (آية 11)، و"صَوْتُ صَارِخٍ فِي ٱلْبَرِّيَّةِ: أَعِدُّوا طَرِيقَ ٱلرَّبِّ. ٱصْنَعُوا سُبُلَهُ مُسْتَقِيمَةً" (آية 3). يوحنا المعمدان، لابساً وبر الإبل وحامْلاً باقة من الجرادِ، صَرخَ في البرية، مبشراً بمعموديةَ التوبة لمغفرة الخطايا .
صَرخَ إِلى الناس، "توبوا، لأن مخلص البشريةِ آتٍ؛ أعدوا الطريق أمامه، أجعلوا سبل الخلاص مستقيمة. توقفوا عن عبادة آلهة الوثنيين و اقبلوا الرب في قلوبكم".
