I due quartetti op. 74 e op. 95, che Beethoven compose tra il 1809 e il 1810 nel pieno di una svolta esistenziale, sono due capolavori diversissimi. Il primo, che alcuni chiamarono “delle arpe” a motivo dell’uso insistito del “pizzicato”, è in bilico tra passato e futuro, tra serenità e inquietudine. Il secondo, definito “serioso” dallo stesso Beethoven e pubblicato solo nel 1816, è invece concentratissimo e ormai decisamente proiettato verso le vertigini dell’ultimo stile.
