ヨハネの福音書 第 6 章では、主は次のようにおっしゃいます。「わたしはいのちのパンです。」 人々は、イエスから肉のための食物を食べて満腹しました。翌日、人々は再びイエスを求めて来ましたが、イエスは、「なくなる食物のためではなく、いつまでも保ち、永遠のいのちに至る食物のために働きなさい。」とおっしゃいました。そこで人々は、尋ねました。「私たちは、神のわざを行なうために、何をすべきでしょうか」（ヨハネ 6:28）。イエスは、お答えになりました。「あなたがたが、神が遣わした者を信じること、それが神のわざです」（ヨハネ 6:29）。
