旧約聖書には、メルキゼデクという名の大祭司がいました。アブラハムの時代、ケドルラオメルと王たちがアブラハムと盟約を結び、ソドムとゴモラの全財産を奪って行きました。アブラハムは、自分の故郷で生まれた自分の訓練を受けたしもべを武装させ、ケドルラオメルとその盟約国との戦争に導きました。
そこで、アブラハムはエラムの王ケドルラオメルを打ち破り、王たちはアブラハムと盟約を結び、おいのロトとその所有物を取り戻しました。アブラハムが敵を打ち破った後、シャレムの王であり、いと高き神の祭司でもあったメルキゼデクは、パンとぶどう酒を持って来て、アブラハムを祝福しました。 そしてアブラハムは彼にすべての物の十分の一を与えました (創世記 第14章)。
