L’unico dei tre in tonalità minore presenta una forma più regolare rispetto al primo; ma i suoi profili tematici, le tecniche di sviluppo e l’uso dei registri estremi degli strumenti sono altrettanto innovativi. Come nel caso del primo quartetto, anche qui Beethoven ricorse a un’antologia di canzoni russe in omaggio al dedicatario: ne trasse il tema del Trio dello Scherzo, che sarà in seguito utilizzato da Musorgskij per l’Incoronazione del Boris Godunov.
