About this listen

How can I as a cellist performing live still control the overall sense or structure of the piece, performing builds or drops while I am playing…. But both my hands are occupied!? This podcast episode explores audiovisual performance techniques and the idea of digital musicianship. The concepts are explored on the back of a project in which tools such as live looping with Ableton Live and a BOSS-RC loop station. This was combined with visuals of a previously filmed performance outdoors. What kind of planning goes into a performance like this? How can there still be space for improvisation? In “The Digital Musician” Andrew Hugill defines what a virtuoso digital musician. What can we understand by this term? What kind of skills would a traditional musician have to learn? I found this project a great example of how music and media can enrich each other.
