耶稣上山传教时,众人跟着他。耶稣把手按在只够少数人吃饱不多的食物上,祝谢和行奇迹,用饼和鱼喂饱了5,000多人,还剩下12篮子。所以,人们跟着耶稣,求耶稣做他们的王。他们心想:“有这样的王不是太好了吗?”所以,他们想叫主做他们的王,但耶稣却离开到海的另一边去了。
众人拼命跟着他,想从他那里吃到另一顿饭,耶稣责备他们说:“不要为那必坏的食物劳力,要为那存到永生的食物劳力”(约翰福音6:27)。众人为了那必坏的食物跟着耶稣,那时他们是为了暂时解决他们饥饿的问题,没有认识到真正永生的食物在于耶稣。所以耶稣责备他们。
