Questa quarta puntata del ciclo segna il passaggio di testimone da Maddalena Bonechi, che ha analizzato l’op. 18, a Marco Mangani, che inizia a esaminare l’op. 59. Nel febbraio del 1807 il pubblico viennese ascoltò i tre nuovi quartetti che Beethoven aveva composto l’anno precedente, dedicandoli all’ambasciatore russo conte Razumovsky. Tutti si attendevano un ulteriore passo nella direzione dell’op. 18: rimasero invece sconvolti dalle novità. Il Quartetto in fa maggiore op. 59 n. 1, del quale si occupa questa trasmissione, era senza dubbio il più audace. Gli esecutori lo accolsero ridendo, convinti che Beethoven avesse voluto prendersi gioco di loro.
