קודש הקודשים היה המקום בו אלוהים שכן. רק הכהן הגדול יכל להיכנס אל קודש הקודשים אחת לשנה, ביום הכיפורים בנושאו את דם שעיר הקורבן למען מחילת חטאיהם של בני ישראל. הוא עשה כן כיוון שקודש הקודשים של המשכן, בית האלוהים, היה מקום קדוש שאליו הוא לא יכל להיכנס אלא אם כן הוא לקח את דם הקורבן אשר על ראשו הוא סמך את ידיו, כדי למחוק את רשעותם של החוטאים. במילים אחרות, אפילו הכהן הגדול לא יכל להימנע מהרשעת האלוהים אלא אם כן הוא קיבל את מחילת חטאיו כשהוא מקריב קורבן לפני שנכנס לפניו.
