Святеє святих було місцем, де жив Бог. І тільки первосвященик міг увійти у святеє святих один раз на рік, в День Очищення, з кров’ю жертовного козла для прощення гріхів юдеїв. Він робив це, тому що святеє святих скинії, Дім Божий, було святим місцем, куди він не міг увійти без крові жертви, на голову котрої клав свої руки, щоб змити прогрішення грішників. Іншими словами, навіть первосвященик не міг уникнути Божого покарання, не отримавши прощення гріхів через жертву до того, як входив у Його присутність.
