- Was not able to join a religious order due to economics and geography, so she founded her own: the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ

- Ushered the Catholic Church through Vatican II and into the modern era
- Maintained the Church's teaching on contraception in Humanae Vitae
- Opened up dialogue with the outside world
