The opportunity to relax and recharge after a busy day. Unfortunately, for some the bright and shiny world of sleep is elusive. There are a number of different reasons why people suffer from sleepless nights. Changes in weather patterns, work pressures and a lot of different things can have an impact on your sleep. For some, the very first thing that occurs when they go to bed is their minds race out of control. They think about the millions of things that they have to do the following day and worry about every single outcome. This anxiety can cause them to spend the whole night tossing and turning in bed.For others, the sleep itself causes them to feel groggy and exhausted when they wake up. They struggle to get enough sleep and feel tired and stressed when they wake up.In both cases, one of the biggest contributors to sleep deprivation is the mind. How Can sleep help us?As humans, we have evolved to sleep. Although we have deprived of sleep during the evolution, we have still managed to survive.Sleep allows us to lower our stress levels. When we are stressed, the hormones that are released into our bodies cause us to be more alert and awake. When we sleep, these hormones are cleared out of our bodies and we are able to rest without any problems. When we sleep, our body and mind have a chance to repair and rejuvenate. The muscles have time to relax, the skin gets a chance to regenerate and our body can repair itself.Sleep is important for our performance the next day. When we sleep, our body is able to fully recharge itself. When we wake up, we are full of energy and ready to start the day.The Calming Art of SleepThere are a number of things that you can do to help yourself get more sleep.Take care of yourself at nightBefore you go to bed, make sure that you take a good look at yourself. Make sure that you have eaten enough and that you have had some water. Make sure that you are not too hot or too cold.Making yourself comfortable is the most important part of this. If your body is not comfortable, then it is going to be difficult to get to sleep. If your body is comfortable, then your mind will have an easier time relaxing and you will be able to fall asleep more easily.Get some natural sunlightMany people struggle to sleep because of difficulty sleeping in the darkness. Natural light helps our body produce the sleep hormone Melatonin. When we have natural light, it is easier for our bodies to fall asleep.Make sure that you get some natural light during the day. This does not have to be sunlight. It could be from a window or from some artificial lighting.Avoid caffeine at nightCaffeine is a stimulant and caffeine is consumed in many different places. It can be in tea, coffee, chocolate, soft drinks or in supplements.Caffeine is a diuretic. This means that it increases the amount of water in your body. This makes it more difficult for you to fall asleep.Avoid caffeinated drinks late in the day. The caffeine can take up to 8 hours to leave your system. These include soft drinks, tea and coffee.Try a meditation or mindfulness practiceMeditation and mindfulness are practices that can really help you relax. When you practice meditation, you focus on your breathing. You focus on the in and outs of your breathing. You allow your thoughts to come and go and you just focus on your breathing. When you practice mindfulness, you focus on the present moment. You focus on your surroundings. You focus on what you see. You focus on what you have in your immediate surroundings. Both meditation AND mindfulness help to lower our stress levels. When you lower our stress levels, it is easier for us to fall asleep.Avoid screen time before bedScreen time before bed can make it difficult for you to fall asleep.Screens can stimulate our brains and make it more difficult for us to fall asleep. It is best not to use screens before bed.Put your phone in a drawer and turn off all screens before you go to sleep.---=======DISCLAIMER:This episode is ad-supported and you can support us financially by subscribing as little as $5 a month on our Patreon page or on Apple Podcast Subscriber-Only Audio.
