耶稣创造奇迹喂饱5,000多人后,想渡过海到一个叫做迦百农的镇上去。由于人们想拥他为王,耶稣独自上山作祈祷,而他的门徒自己乘船去了迦百农。门徒乘船三、四里时,狂风大作。但因为耶稣向着船行在海面上,和他的门徒一起上了船,他们安全地到了要去的地方。
第二天,众人在海的另一边看见只看到一艘小船,他们匆忙上船去找耶稣时,心想:“耶稣必定乘船到别的地方去了。”当他们到了海的另一边找到耶稣,他们对耶稣说:“拉比,你在这里吗?你什么时候到这里的?”然后耶稣告诉他们说:“我实实在在地告诉你们,你们找我,并不是因见了神迹,乃是因吃饼得饱。不要为那必坏的食物劳力,要为那存到永生的食物劳力,就是人子要赐给你们的,因为人子是父神所印证的”(约翰福音6:26-27)。
