A igreja é perfeita, enquanto corpo de Cristo, mas sujeita às imperfeiçoes humanas no que se refere ao comportamento de seus membros. A igreja está longe do ideal. Demonstra-se, muitas vezes, fraca, débil e defeituosa. Mas ainda assim é o único objeto na Terra, do supremo amor divino, destinado à salvação de pecadores. Embora seja possível ser salvo sem a igreja, ela é insubstituível e necessária. Ela é o laboratório onde Deus realiza os milagres da graça.
