About this listen

There is a rich history of mental illness. It started with a wandering womb. The Greek word for uterus is hysteria which described emotionally charged behavior originally thought to happen only in women. During the Victorian era hysteria was a common diagnosis and Dr. Kellogg and a bunch of members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church ran the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan in the late 1800’s. Dr. Kellogg was famous for flaked cereal and masturbation as cures for hysteria. At least they left you with a full tummy and a happy disposition. Dr. Kellogg also believe in enemas, baths and using vibrators on other muscles. Hysteria was finally removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illnesses until 1980.

Join us as we discuss these and other interesting topics regarding the early days of mental illness and the changes in how mental health is handled.
