All’età di 22 anni Beethoven si stabilisce a Vienna e cerca di affermarsi nella grande capitale. Mozart è morto da un anno e il nome di maggior prestigio è quello di Haydn. Grazie all’aiuto di un generoso mecenate, il conte Waldstein, il giovane musicista entra in contatto con Haydn, con il quale tuttavia il rapporto non sarà idilliaco. E’ questo il momento dell’esordio ufficiale come compositore di sonate, con le tre dell’op.2, che appunto a Haydn sono dedicate e che rivelano subito una forte carica innovativa.
