Negli anni ’80, sotto la guida del giudice Giuseppe Viola e con l’arrivo del tecnico Filippo Faina e del giocatore Massimo Bianchi, la Viola inizia a puntare alla Serie A. Grazie al sostegno dell’ingegnere Gianni Scambia, la società diventa solida e ambiziosa. Dopo una delusione nella stagione 1981/82, causata da sfortuna e inesperienza tecnica, il club rilancia ingaggiando Mark Campanaro. Nella stagione 1982/83, con l’allenatore Gianfranco Benvenuti e la coppia Bianchi-Campanaro, la Viola compie un’impresa: vince 21 delle ultime 23 partite e conquista la storica promozione in Serie A.
