أثناء فترة الكنيسة الاولى، الكثير من المسيحيين كانوا يهيمون في الأرض باحثين عن مكان آمن يمكن أن يهربوا إليه من اضطهاد السلطات الرومانية. استمرت الإمبراطورية الرومانية في سياسة الاضطهاد حتى بعد انتهاء عصر الإمبراطور نيرون، حيث كان لا يزال المسيحيون يتحدون سلطان الاباطرة التاليين. لقد قبل القديسون الاوائل و اعترفوا بالسلطة الأرضية للأباطرة الرومان لكنهم رفضوا أن يعترفوا بها عندما تطلب ذلك منهم أن يتركوا إيمانهم. و لسبب انهم وقفوا ضد هذا المطلب للسلطات الرومانية، فإن تاريخ الكنيسة الأولى كان مليئا بالاضطهاد و الاستشهاد.
