Когда во времена Ветхого Завета грешник приносил в жертву Богу какое-нибудь животное, он признавал, что умереть за грехи надлежало ему самому, но вместо него погибало жертвенное животное, поскольку ему путем возложения рук были переданы его грехи. После того как жертвенному животному перерезали горло, оно истекало кровью, искупая тем самым грешника. Таким образом, грешники должны были всем своим сердцем верить в то, что Бог прощал им все их грехи согласно установленному Им обряду жертвоприношения в скинии, а именно при передаче всех грехов жертвенному животному и пролитии его крови.
